This paper analyzes the effective action of quantum gravity and matter fields in the Landau background gauge, focusing on BRST invariance and associated Ward identities. The authors explicitly compute one-loop counterterm Lagrangians and observe that the matter self-energy remains finite, suggesting potential finiteness at higher loop orders. This work provides a detailed gauge-theoretic treatment of quantum gravity at one-loop.
Finite matter self-energy in quantum gravity at one-loop in the Landau gauge hints at a path to renormalizability.
We examine, in the Landau background gauge, the effective action of a quantum theory of gravitational and matter fields. We analyse the BRST invariance of this theory and study the Ward identities which implement the symmetry of the background effective action. The off-shell and on-shell counterterm Lagrangians are explicitly calculated in this gauge at one-loop order. We argue that the matter self-energy in the Landau background gauge, which is finite to this order, may be finite also at higher loops.
