The authors investigate the Heisenberg dynamics of continuum fermions in $\mathbb{R}^d$ interacting via general pair potentials within the canonical operator-algebraic framework. They establish that the time evolution fails to be pointwise-norm continuous on the canonical anticommutation relation (CAR) algebra, even when restricted to its gauge-invariant subalgebra. Leveraging automatic-continuity theory, they show that the CAR algebra is strictly non-invariant under the dynamics for almost all times, establishing a fundamental breakdown of standard $C^*$-algebraic formulations in continuous fermionic field theories.
Standard $C^*$-algebraic foundations fail for continuum interacting fermions: time evolution maps physical observables completely outside the canonical anticommutation relation algebra for almost all times.
We study the Heisenberg dynamics of continuum fermions in $\IR^d$ interacting through a pair potential. For a large class of nonconstant pair potentials and under suitable assumptions on the dispersion relation and external potential, we prove that the dynamics fails to be pointwise-norm continuous even on the gauge-invariant CAR algebra. An automatic-continuity argument then shows that neither the CAR algebra nor its gauge-invariant subalgebra is invariant under the dynamics, with non-invariance occurring for almost all times.
