The paper introduces HIDE&SEEK (HS), a novel suite of pixel-wise reconstruction attacks designed to remove watermarks from machine-generated images (MGIs). HS leverages the redundancy in MGIs to reconstruct watermark-free images with minimal visual degradation. Experiments demonstrate that HS effectively circumvents state-of-the-art proactive watermarking defenses at negligible computational cost, highlighting vulnerabilities in current MGI protection strategies.

Watermarking has emerged as a key defense against the misuse of machine-generated images (MGIs). Yet the robustness of these protections remains underexplored. To reveal the limits of SOTA proactive image watermarking defenses, we propose HIDE&SEEK (HS), a suite of versatile and cost-effective attacks that reliably remove embedded watermarks while preserving high visual fidelity.
