The authors design a dual-polarized backscattering rectenna that dynamically switches between RF energy harvesting and backscatter modulation using a two-bit digital control scheme across orthogonal polarization channels. This dual-mode operation directly tackles the energy constraints and physical-layer vulnerability of battery-free edge devices by eliminating the need for power-hungry active RF transmitters. Evaluated in a prototype battery-free Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) sensor, the system harvested operating energy while reliably transmitting a 16-byte AES-128 encrypted payload over the wireless power link to prevent replay, relay, and eavesdropping attacks.
Battery-free edge nodes can now achieve cryptographic-grade uplink security without active RF generation by modulating orthogonal polarizations directly over the power beam that energizes them.
This paper proposes an innovative dual-polarized backscattering rectenna that operates in two distinct modes鈥攅nergy harvesting and backscattering modulation鈥攄riven by two-bit digital control signals. By utilizing two orthogonal (co- and cross-) polarizations, the design represents a versatile candidate for IoT applications such as battery-free wireless sensing, identification, localization, and communication. The rectenna鈥檚 dual functionality is validated through its integration into a proof-of-concept battery-free wireless sensor, where it operates both as an energy harvester and as a dual-polarized backscattering modulator. As a proof of concept, a 16-byte AES-128 encrypted payload is backscattered over the wireless power transfer link to enhance the resilience of a battery-free Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) wireless sensor against replay, relay, and eavesdropping attacks.
