Synthesizing proceedings and consensus from an ICML workshop, this survey reviews the current technical and design landscape of generative systems built for human-AI co-creation. As foundation models transition from passive, prompt-based generation to active collaborative partners, defining shared agency and interactive steering mechanisms has become a core bottleneck for effective deployment. The paper maps out cross-modal collaborative paradigms and outlines a research roadmap targeting real-time latent space steering, mutual adaptation, and the lack of robust co-creative evaluation benchmarks.
Moving beyond passive prompt-and-generate workflows to genuine human-AI collaboration requires solving open technical challenges in mutual agency, real-time latent steering, and dynamic evaluation.
This survey article has grown out of the human-AI co-creativity workshop organized by the authors at the ICML 2026 conference. We organized this workshop as part of a community-building effort to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in topics of generative AI, creativity, and human-AI co-creation. This article aims to provide an overview of the workshop activities and highlight several future research directions in the area of human-AI co-creativity.
