This paper establishes the equivalence between viscosity solutions and weak solutions for a class of parabolic equations of the form $\partial_t(|u|^{p-2}u) = \operatorname{div}(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u)$, specifically for non-negative solution functions. This equivalence is crucial for understanding the well-posedness and regularity of solutions to these degenerate parabolic equations, which arise in various physical phenomena. The key result confirms that under the non-negativity constraint, the two distinct solution concepts coincide, providing a unified framework for analysis.
Non-negative viscosity solutions and weak solutions are proven equivalent for a class of degenerate parabolic equations.
We study the relation between viscosity solutions and weak solutions of the equation $$\partial_t\left(|u|^{p-2}u\right)\,=\, \operatorname{div}(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u).$$ We prove that at least for non-negative functions these are equivalent concepts.
