This paper investigates the Morse index rigidity of harmonic maps from $n$-spheres into complex projective spaces and complex Grassmannians. The authors prove that index-$(n+1)$ harmonic maps $\mathbb{S}^n \to \mathbb{CP}^m$ are pseudo horizontally weakly conformal, which restricts $n$ to odd dimensions and forces an index of at least $n+2$ for even-dimensional spheres. Additionally, they establish that this geometric rigidity fails for general target manifolds by constructing an index-5 counterexample from $\mathbb{S}^4$ into the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}_{\mathbb{C}}(2,4)$.
Even-dimensional spheres cannot support lowest-index harmonic maps to complex projective space, establishing a strict dimension parity barrier in the stability landscape of manifold mappings.
In this note, we prove that for n > 2 a harmonic map $\mathbb{S}^n \to \mathbb{CP}^m$, of index n+1 is pseudo horizontally weakly conformal, that $n$ must be odd. In particular, for even n every non-constant harmonic map $\mathbb{S}^n \to \mathbb{CP}^m$ has index at least n+2. We also present a harmonic map from $\mathbb{S}^4$ to $\mathrm{Gr}_{\mathbb{C}}(2,4)$ of index 5 that is not pseudo horizontally weakly conformal, so the statement does not extend to Grassmannians.
