The authors investigate the topological maximality of unordered configuration spaces of $n$ points on a non-singular real algebraic curve $C$ of genus $g$ with respect to the Smith-Thom inequality. Determining when configuration spaces inherit the M-variety property resolves fundamental questions concerning the topology of real symmetric products and point configurations. They prove that the configuration space achieves Smith-Thom maximality if and only if the underlying curve $C$ is maximal, with the sole exception occurring when the curve is rational ($g=0$) and $n$ is even.
Unordered configuration spaces on real algebraic curves inherit topological maximality strictly when the base curve is an M-curve, except in the genus-zero case where point parity governs the bound.
Let C be a non-singular real algebraic curve of genus g. The real structure on C induces a real structure on the configuration space of n distinct unlabeled points on C. We prove that this configuration space is maximal (in the sense of the Smith-Thom inequality) if and only if C is maximal or the genus of C is zero and n is even.
