The authors resolve the global energy minimization problem for the Ginzburg-Landau functional on the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^n$ under the equivariant boundary condition $u(x)=x$ on $\partial B$. Establishing whether symmetry-breaking ground states can emerge has long been a central question in variational PDE theory and topological defect modeling. They prove that the classical rotationally symmetric degree-one vortex is the strictly unique global minimizer for all dimensions $n \geq 2$ across the entire parameter regime $\varepsilon > 0$.
Rotational symmetry strictly dominates across all dimensions and scales: the canonical degree-one vortex profile is the unconditionally unique global minimizer of the Ginzburg-Landau energy for any $\varepsilon > 0$.
We consider the problem of minimizing the Ginzburg-Landau functional among $\mathbb{R}^n$-valued maps from the unit ball $B \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ with vortex boundary condition $u(x) = x$ on $\partial B$. We show that, for every Ginzburg-Landau parameter $\varepsilon > 0$, there exists a unique minimizer given exactly by the rotationally symmetric vortex solution in dimension $n\geq 2$.
