This paper resolves Qiongling Li's conjecture concerning the pointwise monotonicity of energy density along the $\mathbb{C}^*$-flow of stable $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{C})$ Higgs bundles. The authors prove that the conjecture holds universally in rank two, establishing that harmonic metric energy density is pointwise nondecreasing along $\mathbb{C}^*$-orbits for all stable $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ configurations. Crucially, they reveal this behavior is genuinely rank-dependent by constructing explicit counterexamples where monotonicity fails for every rank $n \ge 3$.
Energy density monotonicity along the $\mathbb{C}^*$-flow is purely a rank-two anomaly: it holds universally for $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ Higgs bundles but systematically breaks down for every rank $n \ge 3$.
We study a conjecture of Qiongling Li concerning the pointwise monotonicity of the energy density along the $\mathbb C^*$-flow of stable $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb C)$ Higgs bundles. We prove that the conjecture holds in rank two: for every stable $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb C)$ Higgs bundle, the energy density is pointwise nondecreasing along the $\mathbb C^*$-orbit. In contrast, we show that this phenomenon is genuinely rank-dependent. For every rank $n\geq 3$, we construct stable $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb C)$ Higgs bundles for which the energy density fails to be monotone along the $\mathbb C^*$-flow.
