The authors investigate the stability and minimality of 1-homogeneous solutions to the Alt-Caffarelli one-phase free boundary problem constructed from Cartan isoparametric cubic polynomials in dimensions $d \in \{5, 8, 14, 26\}$. They prove that these homogeneous profiles are unstable in dimensions 5, 8, and 14, but become energy-minimizing in dimension 26. This resolves a long-standing structural question by uncovering the first singular minimizing cone in the one-phase problem that is neither axially symmetric nor of Lawson-type.
Singular energy-minimizing cones in free boundary problems are no longer confined to axial or Lawson-type geometries: Cartan cubic polynomials generate an entirely new, non-symmetric class of minimizers in dimension 26.
In this paper we study a class of 1-homogeneous solutions of the one-phase problem coming from the Cartan isoparametric cubic polynomials, which exist only in dimensions $d=5,8,14,26$. Our main result shows that they are unstable in dimensions $d=5,8,14$, and minimizing in dimension $d=26$. This provides the first example of a singular minimizing cone in the Alt-Caffarelli problem that is neither axially symmetric nor of Lawson-type.
