This note addresses an open question posed by Bruè et al. (2022) regarding whether the fractional bounded variation spaces $BV^s(\mathbb{R}^n)$ form complex interpolation families. Clarifying the interpolation behavior of these spaces is fundamental for establishing sharp Sobolev-type inequalities and variational formulations in non-smooth functional analysis. The author settles the problem in the negative, proving that $BV^s(\mathbb{R}^n)$ spaces cannot be realized via standard complex interpolation methods.
Fractional bounded variation spaces $BV^s(\mathbb{R}^n)$ fail to form complex interpolation scales, definitively refuting an open conjecture on the functional structure of fractional gradient spaces.
In this short communication we answer negatively to a question posed by the authors in their work \cite[Section 1.4]{Brue2022} about the complex interpolation nature of the spaces $BV^{s}(\R^n)$, introduced by G.E. Comi and G. Stefani in \cite{ComiStefani2019}.
