This work formulates fully discrete Active Flux schemes for the two-dimensional Euler equations by pairing compact spatial reconstructions with genuinely multidimensional evolution operators for point-value degrees of freedom. Evolving interface point values alongside cell averages eliminates directional splitting errors, providing a path toward highly scalable, low-dissipation hyperbolic solvers. By deriving third-order accurate evolution operators via the method of bicharacteristics, the authors characterize the exact stability boundaries and convergence behaviors dictated by different reconstruction strategies.
Truly multidimensional wave propagation in compressible fluid flow can now achieve third-order accuracy on Cartesian grids by combining bicharacteristic evolution operators directly with Active Flux point updates.
We present new fully discrete Cartesian grid Active Flux methods for the two-dimensional Euler equations of gas dynamics. A key component of these methods is the evolution operator used to evolve point-value degrees of freedom. Therefore, we derive several new, third-order accurate, multidimensional evolution operators for point-value updates of the linearized Euler equations using the method of bicharacteristics. We also investigate how the reconstruction and choice of approximate evolution operator affect the accuracy and stability of the resulting methods.
