We introduce a computational model integrating astrocyte calcium dynamics, arachidonic acid synthesis, neuronal activity (excitatory/inhibitory), and local blood flow, augmented with extracellular neurotransmitter equations for GABA, glutamate, and norepinephrine. This model demonstrates complex emergent behaviors and reveals a significant coupling between neural network function and its neurogliovascular support system. The key finding is that noradrenaline acts as a leading force, orchestrating the interplay between neuronal activity and metabolic support.
Noradrenaline emerges as the critical conductor of neurogliovascular coupling, dictating the synchronized dance between neuronal firing and blood flow.
In this work we present a model of a neuroglivascular unit associated with a neuronal ensemble. We combine calcium dynamics in the astrocyte, the cascade of synthesis of arachidonic acid and its derivatives, as well as the activity of the network of inhibitory and excitatory neurons with changes in local blood flow. We add equations to the model for extracellular neurotransmitters such as GABA, glutamate, and norepinephrine. We show that the resulting model can exhibit different types of behavior, and also shows a significant connection between the functioning of the neural network and its supporting components.
