We construct a starlike, bounded Lipschitz domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$ exhibiting a simple first positive Neumann eigenvalue, a counterexample to the hot spots conjecture. The corresponding eigenfunction's unique global maximum is shown to be at the origin after appropriate sign selection. This result is achieved through a sequence of domains with refined angular structure, converging to a weighted eigenvalue problem with a radial eigenfunction.
A starlike 3D domain with a simple Neumann eigenvalue has its eigenfunction's maximum at the origin, disproving a long-standing conjecture.
We construct a bounded Lipschitz domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$ that is starlike about the origin and whose first positive Neumann eigenvalue is simple. A corresponding eigenfunction, after a choice of sign, has its unique global maximum at the origin. The construction uses domains with increasingly fine angular structure and convergence to a weighted eigenvalue problem whose first positive eigenfunction is radial.
