This paper leverages existing direct detection exclusion limits for elastic spin-independent dark matter-proton scattering to derive upper bounds on event rates for inelastic scattering. These bounds are then applied to constrain specific effective operators for light, inelastic dark matter in the GeV mass range, focusing on isoscalar, proton-philic, and proton-philic spin-dependent scenarios. The analysis provides novel constraints on these well-motivated inelastic dark matter models by reinterpreting established elastic scattering data.
Existing elastic dark matter detection limits now constrain inelastic scattering scenarios, revealing new avenues for detecting light GeV-scale dark matter.
We convert existing exclusion limits on the elastic spin-independent (SI) dark matter--proton cross sections into upper bounds on the event rate, subsequently applying them to constrain other effective operators for inelastic scattering of light dark matter in the GeV mass region. We focus on three representative scenarios including the isoscalar, proton-philic, and the proton-philic spin-dependent inelastic dark matter model, which are well-motivated in phenomenological studies of dark matter detection.
