The authors derive the explicit formulation of the numerical Onsager-Machlup action functional and its corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations for Euler-discretized stochastic differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motion (fBm). Characterizing these transition paths is essential for computing maximum a posteriori trajectories and analyzing rare-event dynamics in non-Markovian systems with long-range memory. Under regularity conditions on the drift and discrete reference path, the resulting framework provides a rigorous, closed-form discrete variational objective validated across numerical experiments.
Finding the most probable transition paths in non-Markovian stochastic systems no longer requires heuristic approximations: this work provides the explicit numerical Onsager-Machlup action functional and discrete Euler-Lagrange equations for fractional Brownian motion.
In this work, different from previous results, the explicit expression of numerical Onsager-Machlup action functional for Euler discretized SDEs driven by fractional Brownian motion is derived provided the drift coefficient and numerical reference path satisfy some suitable conditions. Then numerical fractional Euler-Lagrange equations for numerical Onsager-Machlup action functional are also obtained. Finally, numerical experiments to illustrate and support the theoretical findings.
