This paper provides a rigorous spectral analysis of Kronecker-structured preconditioners used to solve the large, coupled linear stage systems arising from implicit Runge-Kutta (IRK) discretizations of linear wave equations. While IRK methods offer high-order accuracy and unconditional stability for hyperbolic problems, their practical adoption has long been bottlenecked by the absence of theoretical convergence guarantees for stage-equation solvers. The authors formally prove the eigenvalue clustering and spectrum bounds that explain the robust, rapid convergence previously observed in practice.
Kronecker-structured preconditioners for implicit wave equation solvers finally have rigorous spectral proofs, resolving the open theoretical gap behind their fast empirical convergence.
We lay out the analysis of the ``Kronecker preconditioners'' adopted in [24] for the linear wave equations. Importantly, we deliver the analysis justifying the claims in~[24, Section 4.2] about these preconditioners and we unpack all of the necessary numerical background for a full understanding of the observed phenomena.
