This paper explores the application of the Lyapunov characteristic exponent (LCE) as a dense reward signal in reinforcement learning to stabilize an inverted pendulum with vertical motion. By leveraging LCE, the agent not only successfully identified the oscillatory behavior characteristic of the Kapitza pendulum but also achieved stabilization by dampening the pivoting motion, maintaining the pendulum in an upright position. These findings highlight the effectiveness of LCE in guiding reinforcement learning agents toward complex stabilization tasks.
Using the Lyapunov characteristic exponent as a reward signal enables stabilization of the inverted pendulum beyond traditional methods, achieving upright balance without oscillation.
We suggest using the Lyapunov characteristic exponent (LCE) as a dense reward signal for the reinforcement learning problem of stabilizing the inverted pendulum with vertical motion. With LCE, the agent not only successfully found the oscillatory motion known as the Kapitza pendulum but also damped the pendulum's pivoting, leaving it in a strictly upright position.
