This study evaluates the application of various AI models for automating the creation of catalogue records in digital collections, a process traditionally reliant on slow and costly expert manual labor. By conducting both qualitative and quantitative assessments, the research identifies key differences in model performance and provides actionable recommendations for broader AI implementation in cataloguing tasks. The findings suggest that AI can significantly enhance efficiency and reduce costs in the cataloguing process, making it a viable alternative to manual methods.
AI models can drastically cut down the time and cost of creating catalogue records, transforming a traditionally manual process.
The creation of digital collections involves not only the digitisation of content, but also the creation of catalogue records for it. This often-overlooked task requires slow and costly expert manual work. In this project, we have evaluated the application of AI models to this task, comparing different implementations and models. This work includes a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the experiments carried out, as well as recommendations on the use of AI models that go beyond the specific use case.
