This paper reflects on two decades of experience with Capture The Flag (CTF) competitions, specifically through the lens of the ENOFLAG team, which was established during the CIPHER II event at DIMVA 2006. The authors analyze the evolution of CTF gameplay and the educational value these contests provide in cybersecurity training. Key findings include insights into the changing dynamics of CTF challenges and the impact of these competitions on skill development and team collaboration in the cybersecurity field.
Two decades of CTF experience reveal critical lessons that could transform how we approach cybersecurity education and team dynamics.
Security contests in the form of CTF (Capture The Flag) exercises are nowadays a common way to learn cyber security. 20 years ago at DIMVA 2006 the on-site CTF CIPHER II was one of the conference highlights and led to the foundation of the team ENOFLAG. In this poster, we reflect on the changes in the CTF gameplay and report on lessons learned while running an academic CTF team for 20 years.
