The theoretical principles of the formation of personal moral traits and value orientations of student youth have been determined. A higher education institution is defined as an environment for creating conditions for the self-development of the individual, support, strengthening life optimism, stimulating students to develop their resources and capabilities. Value orientations are interpreted as a system of principles that determine the orientation of the individual in accordance with his interests and needs, the formation of a certain individual hierarchy of values. The features of the formation of value orientations in the system of moral education of student youth have been determined: orientation on the acquisition of knowledge; participation in the formation and development of modern civil society; social features of the war era; the syndrome of “deferred future”; educational losses. Life perspective is defined as a way of structuring a person’s near and distant future with the help of life goals, programs, which are its structural units. The concept of “life strategy” is revealed as a set of social, cultural and psychological projections of an individual onto his own future. It is established that the value orientations of young people appear as an awareness of their life purpose, leading goals and purpose of life, their own aspirations for self-realization, dreams and ideas about the future, about what is desirable to get from life. The formation of value orientations of student youth is defined as a process of influence of a higher education institution, which involves the gradual accumulation and transformation into the activities of a young person of worldview, cognitive, emotional-motivational and behavioral indicators that provide a stable system of value vectors, conditions for self-realization, life strategies, plans and prospects. A classification of forms of social-educational work aimed at shaping the value orientations of young people is presented.
